Samburu, Buffalo Springs & Shaba National Reserves

These reserves lie in the hot and dry northern part of Kenya. A significant feature of both Samburu and Buffalo Springs, is the Uaso Nyiro River which runs across the park. Along the entire length of this river are many different species of wildlife and birds some only found in this hot and dry habitat.

The park is also home to many lions, leopards, giraffe, zebras and the Beisa Oryx. It is in this park that recently a lion captured the attention of the whole world by repeatedly adopting baby Oryxes.

As a cultural destination, Samburu is home of the Samburu ethnic community, the closest relatives of the Masaai who are to be found concentrated near the southern borders of the country. Both the Maasai and the Samburu have a rich and colourful lifestyle that has inspired research and the writing of many books on African culture.

SHABA NATIONAL RESERVE

How to Get there
From Nairobi drive north to the capital town of Nyeri. En route you will pass the satellite town of Thika, which is fast becoming a major industrial base. Thika is also famous for its vast pineapple farms which you can see as you drive north towards the market center of Sagana. The land is bountiful with rolling hills and meandering valleys, and in between lie fertile, well -tended farms growing tea and coffee and bananas and fruits and vegetables, watered perennially by the clear waters of River Sagana and its many tributaries.

Continuing north you drive past the somewhat chaotic roadside town of Karatina . Here a bustling open air market with mounds of agricultural produce of every description bear testimony to the hard work of the rural folk that tend these rich lands .

From here you will drive on to Nyeri with the gleaming peaks of the snow capped Mt Kenya always present in the horizon ahead. Thereafter continue your drive northwards past the town of Nanyuki and then through wheat farms and country ranches , up a steep road to the town of Timau. From Timau the road makes a most dramatic plunge almost 7000 ft to the semi arid landscape of Isiolo. There is only one main street in the town of Isiolo , lined on either side by tin roofed shops. Business in the town is done at a slow pace typical of the general lifestyle of the nomadic tribes-people who occupy this hot and arid part of Kenya.

From Isiolo, you travel for a short while through dry and hot country to Shaba Game Reserve.
